Position Objectives:

The Road Technician will under limited supervision, operate heavy motorized vehicles and equipment to maintain and repair roads, right of way and bridges within the County.  Maintains Belfield Shop, ensuring all equipment and vehicles are in working order, as well as building maintenance/repair and snow removal as needed.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Operates a variety of trucks and equipment to perform required road maintenance duties.  Operates a dump truck to deliver materials for road work including dirt, gravel, and asphalt; operates a tractor-trailer to deliver equipment to job sites.

·         Repairs and maintains surfaces through activities such as patching asphalt and sealing cracks in pavement.

·         Install and maintain ditches and drainage culverts, guardrails, fences, roadway signs, traffic control devices, and other items and equipment that enhance the safety of County roads.

·         Prepare roads for accessibility, which includes preparing the shoulder, spraying chemicals, laying gravel, etc.; assists in the building, repair, and re-habilitation of new and substandard roads, including culvert installation, road shaping, etc.

·         Perform winter road maintenance and snow removal through plowing, sanding, and other activities to ensure that roads remain passable.

·         Performs manual labor activities including snow and debris removal, snow fence maintenance, foliage maintenance, and others as assigned.  Cuts grass along roadway shoulders.

·         Performs routine inspection and maintenance on trucks and equipment; reports mechanical problems requiring additional repair.

·         Performs building maintenance and repair projects using various hand and power tools.

·         Adheres to safety rules and regulations on all work sites; reports safety hazards and traffic problems.

·         Acts in the interest of public safety during emergencies.

·         Performs other duties as assigned for county needs.

 

Road Technician II

·         In addition to the primary duties and responsibilities listed above for all Road Technicians, the level II Technician is competent in the use of a front-end loader and skid steer.  Assigned to load trucks as well as haul materials.

·         Training, developing, or has obtained competency in the operation of other heavy equipment such as dozer, grader, backhoe, scraper, snowplow, excavator, etc.

·         Has proven skills and is an asset to the department in areas such as vehicle maintenance and repair, welding, or operating a specific piece of equipment.

·         Valid North Dakota Class A Commercial Driver’s License required.

 

Road Technician III

·         The level III Technician is competent in operating multiple pieces of heavy equipment.  They can be assigned to any project and be able to operate the equipment needed.

·         Heavy equipment includes but is not limited to scrapers, motor graders, snowplows, dozer, backhoe, loader, excavator, etc.

·         Valid North Dakota Class A Commercial Driver’s License required.

Minimum Requirements:

·         Knowledge of the principles and practices of road construction, maintenance and repair.

·         Knowledge of state and federal laws governing road construction, maintenance and repair.

·         Knowledge of OSHA rules and regulations.

·         Knowledge of the road system and political boundaries of the County.

·         Knowledge of the principles and practices of building maintenance and repair.

·         Ability to read and understand oral and written work instructions.

·         Ability to read and interpret plans, technical manuals and related sources.

·         Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and supervisors.

·         Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

·         Ability to operate various road construction equipment.

·         Ability to make minor repairs and perform basic maintenance to vehicles and equipment.

Desirable Training and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience working at a County Shop or similar work environment.
  • Possession of a valid State of North Dakota class A commercial driver’s license.
  • Previous experience operating heavy motorized equipment.
